Wonderfully staged and intelligently dialogued, it has no higher difficulties into the life down its extremely unattractive title.” [ 8 ]

The fresh new film’s copywriter and you will manager, Robert Rossen, creates a multidimensional chess game, to own mortal limits, between Johnny, their employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sibling (Nina Foch) has worked at local casino and you can dated an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed body gestures away from love and you will risk, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may smartly assertive photos (and additionally their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle an invisible classic of your style.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, because an authorities inspector, including within the get . Whilst spot observe a familiar pattern, this new characterizations try new and the performances good enough to help you overbalance. Dialog was terse and you can relevant, preventing the sentimental, phoney reach. Strange digital camera basics arrive on occasion to escalate attract and you can momentarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling given that director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, brand new creator and you can representative manufacturer, in addition to helps with making this a flaccid development.” [ eleven ]

Evelyn Keyes performs the nice nothing woman whom brings out the new finest in your and you will Ellen Received ‘s the sleek and you can slinky vixen just who gets him with the jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty due to the fact villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does a unique in a position tour since an exhausted cops inspector exactly who eventually shuts the case. A lot of drinking and you may puffing is completed from the the concerned.” [ 12 ]
